Apply for a building permit
The City of Maplewood issues building permits for new construction, renovations, additions, and major repairs. The process below applies to most residential and small commercial work; large projects may need additional review.
Online application
Most permits can be started online through our permit portal. You will need:
- Site address and parcel number (APN)
- Description of work and scope
- Contractor information (license number, if applicable)
- Drawings and plans (PDF, max 25 MB)
In-person applications
If you prefer to apply in person, the Building & Planning counter is open Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (closed for lunch 12:00–1:00 PM).

Typical permit timelines
- Over-the-counter (OTC) — water heater, simple electrical, fences under 6 feet: usually issued same day
- Plan-check required — additions, kitchen remodels, structural changes: 4–6 weeks for first review, 2–3 weeks per re-submittal
- Discretionary review — variances, design review, conditional use permits: 8–14 weeks
Fees
Permit fees are based on the valuation of the work and the type of permit. The fee schedule is published in the Master Fee Schedule and updated annually. Most residential permits range from $150 to $1,500.
Inspections
Once your permit is issued, schedule inspections at each milestone (foundation, framing, rough electrical/plumbing, insulation, final). Schedule online through the permit portal or call (555) 742-8001 by 7:00 AM the morning of your requested inspection.
